Easy Peasy Brussel Sprouts, or,
Give Me the Simple Life
You have a bunch of Brussel Sprouts in your fridge. Sometimes, you don't want a recipe. Sometimes you just want to cook. Roasting your veggies is an easy way to do that, or as my son Josh would say, "easy peasy." I don't know where that expression came from, or whether he made it up himself, but it is one of his favorites. He says it with a confidence that is so strong it shines, and which astonishes me.
So, dear readers, tune into the easy peasy side of yourselves, and start out by turning on you oven and setting the temperature to 375 or 400 degrees. Then just wash and trim those Brussel Sprouts. Cut them in half if they are large. Toss them in a bowl with olive oil. Prepare a baking pan, and spread the sprouts onto the pan. Sprinkle with a little kosher salt and some black pepper. Put them in the oven and set the timer for 15 minutes. When your timer rings, dings, or buzzes, turn the Brussel Sprouts so the other sides caramelize and crisp up. Put them back in the oven for another 15 minutes, at which point they should be done and ready for some good eatin'.
Easy Peasy, dear reader, no?
The song, "Give Me the Simple Life," by Rube Bloom, says it another way (click the link to the name of the song to hear Steve Tyrell sing it):
I don't believe in frettin' and grievin'
Why mess around with strife
I never was cut out to step and strut out
Give me the simple life
Some find it pleasant dining on pheasant
Those things roll off my knife
Just serve me tomatoes and mashed potatoes
Give me the simple life
A cottage small is all I'm after
Not one that's spacious and wide
A house that rings with joy and laughter
And the ones you love inside
Some like the high road, I like the low road
Free from the care and strife
Sounds corny and seedy, but yes indeedy
Give me the simple life

Dear Readers,
A friend sent me this link regarding the origins of "easy peasy" - thought you might find it interesting:https://britishisms.wordpress.com/2012/01/16/easy-peasy/

Hi Barbara!!!!
David sent me the orange and almond cake link. I cried.
I love this blog.
In re the brussel sprouts, I make them the exact same way BUT I toss
them in walnut oil rather than olive oil The walnut oil adds another
layer of flavor.
